Clinical symptoms

  • Frequent urination, especially at night (nocturia)
  • Sudden urgency to pass urine
  • Weak or interrupted stream
  • Feeling that the bladder is not completely empty
  • Difficulty starting urination (hesitancy)

Treatment options

  • Medicines — alpha-blockers relax the prostate and bladder neck; 5-alpha reductase inhibitors shrink the prostate over time.
  • MIST — minimally invasive surgical therapies that relieve obstruction with less impact on the patient.
  • TURP — endoscopic removal of obstructing prostate tissue using electrosurgery.
  • HoLEP / laser enucleation — laser removal of the prostate adenoma; suitable for large prostates and for many patients on blood thinners.

When to see a urologist

Consult if urinary symptoms affect daily life, if you cannot empty the bladder, have repeated UTIs, or see blood in urine.
