Clinical symptoms
- Intermittent flank pain, often worse after large amounts of fluid
- Nausea and vomiting during pain episodes
- A palpable abdominal lump in severe swelling of the kidney
- Urinary tract infections
Treatment options
- Observation — for mild cases with good kidney function, with regular follow-up scans.
- Pyeloplasty — the standard reconstructive operation (open, laparoscopic or robotic) to remove the blocked segment and rejoin the ureter to the kidney pelvis.
- Endopyelotomy — an endoscopic incision from inside, reserved for selected cases.
When to see a urologist
Seek evaluation for recurrent flank pain, especially after drinking a lot of fluid, or if an ultrasound shows kidney swelling (hydronephrosis).
